On his 90th birthday, minimalist titan Terry Riley has gifted the world an ethereal new Raga, “Komal Reshab Asavari.” This profound piece, co-presented by Red Hot Org and the Kronos Quartet, reflects on the teachings of Riley’s guru, Pandit Pran Nath, with the core essence that “nothing will remain.” It’s a timely artistic response to existential challenges, released ahead of a Kronos Quartet project speaking out against nuclear war.
Ladilikan is a bold fusion of the musical traditions from the West courtesy of Kronos Quartet and those of Africa, via Trio Da Kali on which Western tempered scale instruments blend seamlessly with traditional African instruments, creating a wonderful musical hybrid that is engaging, fascinating and irresistible.
Hazmat Modine can never be accused of settling into their sound and getting too comfy…they make it very clear on their latest release, Cicada, that they are still very much about exploring and evolving. The album features collaborations with Natalie Merchant, the Gange Brass Band, Kronos Quartet and the Tuvan throat-singing ensemble Huun Huur Tu.
