KAN

The band Kan which includes members Aidan O’Rourke and Brian Finnegan have sadly announced they are to stop playing for the forseeable future. We have a special tune of the day from them.

Sadly this is the final India Tour Blog entry from Kan who spent their final day in Calcutta which had its fair share of sparks and I don’t mean the fireworks for Diwali.

KAN head to Calcutta for Day 5 of their India Tour blog, they have an interesting discussion on folk music and meet Tanmoy Bose who toured for many years as Ravi Shankar’s percussionist!

KAN get to do some sightseeing around Bangalore on Day 4 of their tour culminating in a great gig at a jazz venue called Windmills Craftworks…which, much to their appreciation is air-conditioned!

In part three of their Tour Blog KAN head for the cooler leafier climes of Bangalore, hometown of their ‘guardian angel’ Dipti. Ian meets up with Raghu Dixhit and they find time to relax.

Day One of KAN’s Indian tour blog. They take in the madness of Mumbai helped by a James Bond style taxi ride, they chill in the beauitful Taj hotel and Brian gives an insight into the flute in Indian music.

We catch KAN performing at Manchester’s historic Band on the Wall where the rarely seen quartet put on a great performance with their unique blend of folk, jazz and Mayan culture!

DÁN is a recently commissioned touring project made up of 14 well respected artists including Irish group Guidewires, Kan, Alyth McCormack and Breton Quartet. A heady mix of Irish, Scottish, Breton, Middle Eastern and Galician music.

An Tobar will be working with one of Scotland’s foremost musicians, Aidan O’Rourke (Lau, KAN, Blazin’ Fiddles), who will be composing a new piece called TAT-1 for the London 2012 Cultural Olympiad. Includes video interview.

Newcastle University has produced some of the leading artists in the UK folk scene. Now, their Folk and Traditional Music degree is celebrating its 10th birthday with a concert at The Sage Gateshead.

KAN are one of those bands that are at the forefront of moulding and re-defining tradtional music, if this is the standard then the tradtional music scene has rewarding times ahead!
