John Spillane

The nominations for the 7th RTÉ Radio 1 Folk Awards have been announced, including Róis, Lemoncello, Joshua Burnside, Lankum, Christy Moore, Ríoghnach Connolly, Landless, John Spillane, Niamh Bury and more.

John Spillane’s “Fíoruisce – The Legend of the Lough” is epic storytelling, requiring a scale of ambition that few would contemplate. It sits alongside such fine works as Peter Bellamy’s The Transports and Anaïs Mitchell’s Hadestown.

John Spillane announces a hugely ambitious concept album – a two-hour Gaelic folk opera ‘Fíoruisce – The Legend of the Lough’ and shares the first track and video, ‘Réamhcheol/Overture’, featuring Niamh Farrell and Eoghan Ó Ceannabháin.

John Spillane’s “100 Snow White Horses” is a rich, molten cauldron of emotional blissed-out balladry blessed with poetic intimacy and a collection of story-songs that begs immediate listening. A masterclass of eloquent romanticism delivered by a poet of song.

100 Snow White Horses is a new album from John Spillane, due for independent release on 2 April 2021. Inspired by his travels around Ireland, these new songs are full of poetry, Irish mythology and wonder.

Folk Music Gigs happening over the coming week: some will need no introduction such as Richard Thompson and Martin Carthy. There are also some great newcomers such as Blackbeard’s Tea Party and Rosie Doonan & The Snapdragons. Not forgetting the oldtimers: Unstrung Heroes!
