James Yorkston

We rewind to January 2013 and a special Simple Folk Radio show that was hosted by James Yorkston. The show was recorded in his home on the east coast of Scotland, from where he shared some of his favourite folk tunes. These included tracks from Rita Farrell, Willie Clancy, Mick O’Brien and Caoimhín O’Raghallaigh, HMS Ginafore, Nic Jones, Anne Briggs, Jean Ritchie, Dick Gaughan, Bess Cronin, Elle Osborne and more.

James Yorkston, Nina Persson, and Johanna Söderberg form the perfect trio on “Songs for Nina and Johanna,” creating a masterful blend of melancholy and some unexpected emotional uplift. They seem to have invigorated his work while he, in turn, has provided them with some of his most lyrically poignant songs.

James Yorkston has released “Oh Light, Oh Light,” a poignant new single featuring Johanna Söderberg of First Aid Kit. Accompanied by a music video, the track is from his forthcoming album, Songs for Nina and Johanna (out August 22nd), which also features The Cardigans’ Nina Persson. Recorded in Stockholm with The Second Hand Orchestra, the album is a heartfelt and life-affirming meditation on family, love, and parenthood.

James Yorkston has announced his new album, Songs for Nina & Johanna, featuring collaborations with Nina Persson (The Cardigans) and Johanna Söderberg (First Aid Kit). The Scottish songwriter’s sixteenth LP for Domino arrives on August 22nd. Recorded in Stockholm with members of The Second Hand Orchestra, the album is previewed by two new songs and videos, “A Moment Longer” and “Love / Luck,” which are available to stream now.

James Yorkston announces a new collaborative album with David A Jaycock and Lina Langendorf (The Second Hand Orchestra). Due for release in May, listen to ‘Tide’, the first single from Yorkston / Jaycock / Langendorf.

In 2005 a film was made of the Green Man Festival in Wales. It has been unreleased and unseen for nearly 20 years and features performances by Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Alasdair Roberts and Joanna Newsom, among others.

‘Hold. Star. Return’ finds David A. Jaycock exploring more fully the world of antique electronica. A fuzzy, off-kilter melodicism pervades much of this weirdly beautiful album, which manages to be constantly aware of the past and yet never sentimental.

While The Great White Sea Eagle shares much with James Yorkston’s previous album, it somehow manages to hit harder on an emotional and visceral level. A new Yorkston album is always a bracing experience, this one more so than most.

Next Friday sees the release of James Yorkston, Nina Persson and The Second Hand Orchestra’s new album The Great White Sea Eagle. Today, the group share their third song from the record, “The Harmony”.

Last month, James Yorkston, Nina Persson and The Second Hand Orchestra announced their new album The Great White Sea Eagle. Due for release on January 13th, they have today shared the second cut from the record, “An Upturned Crab”.

James Yorkston is reunited with The Second Hand Orchestra and special guest Nina Persson (The Cardigans) for their new album The Great White Sea Eagle. Watch them performing their lead single, “Hold Out For Love”, live.

Starting in July, James Yorkston’s Tae Sup Wi’ A Fifer takes to the road again featuring Gruff Rhys, Salena Godden, Brìghde Chaimbeul, Josie Long, Jeffrey Lewis and Kathryn Joseph.
