Gillian Welch & David Rawlings’ Woodland is steeped in timeworn American folk roots but filtered through a contemporary Americana lens; they remain the benchmark for acoustic roots duos – consummate brilliance.

Gillian Welch & David Rawlings have long been established as immaculate interpreters of old-time acoustic folk and country and this is another outstanding addition to that catalogue.

It took a hurricane wrecking their studio to jolt them into finally making these demos, originally recorded to just fulfil a publishing contract, available. Who said it’s an ill wind that blows no good?

As with the previous volume, it’s hard to believe Gillian Welch has kept a lid on the bulk of these songs for well over a decade, I can’t wait to hear what further nuggets will be revealed in Vol 3.

The equivalent of being gifted all those Dylan and Springsteen songs hitherto locked away unknown and unheard in the vaults. We’re looking forward to Vol 2 and 3.

Gillian Welch confirms the digital release of Boots No.2: The Lost Songs, Vol.1 unearthed from a cache of home demos and reel-to-reel recordings. Vol. 2 and Vol. 3 to follow.

On David Rawlings latest offering, Poor David’s Almanack, there is a sense of playfulness that is as welcome as it is irresistible. An uplifting, gentle and hugely enjoyable record.

Our latest Folk Show features new music from Seamus Fogarty, Alice Howe, Jolie Holland & Samantha Parton, David Rawlings, Steel Sheep, Rachael McShane & The Cartographers and more.

David Rawlings will release his third album, Poor David’s Almanack, on August 11th. He leaves the Dave Rawlings Machine moniker behind and serves up a wry mixture of acoustic and electric music rich in ageless American vernacular.

Hard to believe, but it’s twenty years since Gillian Welch released her groundbreaking debut album, Revival. To mark the occasions, she’s been through the archives and, along with musical partner David Rawlings, has put together Boots No 1: The Official Revival Bootleg, a double disc 21 track collection of demos, outtakes, alternate takes and other previously unreleased tracks.

Some fine vintage folk in this week’s mix from the likes of Sandy Denny, Michael Raven and Joan Mills, Skara Brae and more. There is some dabbling in psych courtesy of Ben Tweddell’s Twelve Hides which was released in August as well as Toby Hay’s new EP which we recently featured in an exclusive first listen. All this and lots more along with extensive track notes.

Ethan Johns returns with his third album and a stellar guest cast including BJ Cole, Jeremy Stacey, Gillian Welch and onetime Flying Burrito Brother and Eagle Bernie Leadon.
