We meet up with English folk masters Eliza Carthy and Jon Boden, our current Artists of the Month, to talk about their wonderful new album Glad Christmas Comes and rum topped diplomacy…

At sixteen songs, Eliza Carthy & Jon Boden’s “Glad Christmas Comes” is, appropriately, like a big Christmas lunch that you won’t want to finish. Beautiful music from two of our very finest and most valuable artists, it is a very easy album to love.

The Eliza Carthy Trio’s ‘Conversations We’ve Had Before’, on which David Delarre and Saul Rose join Eliza, is “one of the best traditional folk releases of the year so far.” A digital-only release, it is to be hoped that such an enigmatic and compelling album receives the attention that it deserves.

Taken from her new album, watch Eliza Carthy’s new video for ‘Good Morning Mr Walker’ featuring The Sweet Rosemarys who include Jon Boden and John Spiers, Sheema Mukherjee, Rory MacLeod, Angeline Morrison and the Mighty Sparrow’s bandleader himself, Lane Steinberg.

Eliza Carthy’s Queen Of The Whirl is all top-drawer…the element that fires listeners up the most is that voice. As far as natural-born instruments go, it is one of the best and wow, does she know how to use it.

Our Song of the Day comes from Eliza Carthy & The Restitution with their new single ‘The Snow it Melts the Soonest’. It’s taken from her new album ‘Queen Of The Whirl’.

The Sidmouth Folk Festival have announced a special tribute concert to Norma Waterson led by Martin and Eliza Carthy and featuring a number of special guests and good friends.

Norma Waterson and Martin Carthy now 82 and 80 years old have had their incomes severely impacted by Covid and illness and need your support to help raise funds until Martin and Eliza can return to touring and again become self-sufficient.

EFDSS is delighted to announce that Eliza Carthy MBE has agreed to become its next President. Eliza takes over the honorary post from Shirley Collins. Angeline Morrison and Arti Prashar have also been appointed as board members.

For health reasons, Martin and Eliza Carthy’s Autumn & Winter work went down. They now have a heap of early 2022 duo dates as well as Eliza Carthy Trio dates in April 2022. Don’t miss their online concert this month.

Eliza Carthy shares lockdown video for Neptune (In the Stars Wants his Bloody Pound of Fish) from her latest album with Ben Seal – Through That Sound.

It’s a real pleasure to welcome Eliza into our living-rooms again, and her latest batch of thought-provoking and unusually contoured songs is presented in the context of a fruitful new musical collaboration – so come to the cabaret!
