ceri rhys matthews

I head to Swansea Bay in South Wales to meet Welsh traditional musician Ceri Rhys Matthews to talk about his Yscolan musicians retreat, music and art. I came away feeling very inspired, you can listen to the audio interview here.

For three days, Bristol’s Colston Hall was transformed into a place called Lau-Land. Traditional music mixed with the avant-garde and the genre-defying to create an all-round remarkable experience. But what else would you expect from a weekend curated by such an innovative, creative band such as Lau?

Ceri Rhys Matthews of Welsh band Fernhill is running a musicians retreat this coming Monday. All in the splendid isolation of a fifteenth century gatehouse in the magical rural setting of the Preseli hills, West Wales.

I have Ceri Rhys Matthews of Fernhill to thank for our Song of the Day from Joni Mitchell. This is a live performance of ‘Woodstock’.

They fuse ancient and modern, Welsh and English traditions into a seamless and coherent, contemporary whole without compromise. Fernhill are one of the finest folk groups we are blessed to be able to witness today.

One of our all time favourites Welsh folk band Fernhill kick off their tour today which culminates in a performance at this year’s Greenman Festival.

Oes i Oes is a beautiful Welsh album from Cass Meurig and Nial Cain. It is released this month, a thing of great beauty that I could happily listen to it all day and never tire of!

Ceri Rhys Matthews shares a log he kept from his recent project ‘Rambles Through Tunes’…”the evening was beautiful with all the swansea heads there. paul the griff, nigel jenkins, the chapel people, the freeform jazz poets, all the heads…”

Ceri Rhys Matthews, folk musician, artist and founding member of Welsh group ‘fernhill‘ has developed a new show: ‘Rambles Through Tunes’ which will warm the hearts of many.

Canu rhydd is a superb new album from fernhill. They are one of most amazing and beautiful sounding folk bands I’ve ever heard. With the spell-binding and beautiful voice of Julie Murphy and the bands unique sound it doesn’t get any better.
