Anne Briggs

Devin Hoff pays tribute to Anne Briggs through a series of dramatic but somehow faithful rearrangements. Featuring a stellar cast of like-minded Briggs fans, Voices From the Empty Moor looks backwards for inspiration but is entirely contemporary in feel.

We chat to guitarist James Kitchman and vocalist Sylvia Schmidt about their new album, Plus, watch them performing ‘Lowlands’, inspired by one of folk music’s most enigmatic figures, Anne Briggs.

All-in-all, this is one of the most significant recordings of the period. A tribute to the recording techniques of Sean Davies and the production of AL Lloyd, a tribute to the work of Topic Records and a tribute to Anne Briggs. This is music to pass on to the next generations.

Congratulations to the Five winners of our recent Vinyl Giveaway who will receive a copy of Anne Brigg’s Sing A Song For You LP and June Tabor’s Ashore.

It’s no great stretch to say that Anne Briggs is our greatest folk singer, and if this new release brings her incomparable talent to a wider audience, then it will be the least she deserves.

This week’s mix is the first in a new mix series in which we only feature vinyl and cassette format. The first comprises entirely of vinyl 7″ singles/EPs. The geeky bit: The mix was recorded using Audio-Technica AT-LP5 using the built-in phono stage and USB output. I may use an external phono Stage next time, just for comparison. Some of the singles were in need of a good clean so expect some crackles …

Jon Boden compiles The Ultimate Guide To English Folk, a lavish two-disc primer designed to appeal to experienced folkies and newbies alike. It is not the first such collection, but it is probably the most wide-ranging, lovingly compiled and inventively sequenced. One of the most important messages to take from this compilation is that while folk music in England is something of an extended family, it is by no means …

To mark the release of her new Four Songs EP on Fledgling Records, Anne Briggs talks to Folk Radio UK in a rare and in-depth interview in which she recalls the folk scene of the sixties and the time she spent with the travelling community.

Fledg’ling Records announce new Anne Briggs EP. Rare, simple, unadorned and intimate performances, aching with poignancy, make their first appearance on record, fifty years after recording and capture Anne Briggs singing at just the right time.
