Rob catches up with Alasdair Roberts during his Pangs Tour to talk about his new album, his early influences from traditional folk to Glasgow’s underground DIY scene and his need to always be creating something new. An obsession he has continually rewarded us with.

Pangs is a collection of songs that are tighter and more incisive than practically anything else in Alasdair Roberts’ massive back catalogue. Yet another cracking instalment from one of the finest recording artists currently working in the folk idiom.

Alasdair Roberts and Siobhan Miller were recent guests on Roddy Hart’s ‘The Quay Sessions’. Watch Alasdair performing ‘Farewell to Glasgow City’ and Siobhan ‘The Ramblin’ Rover.

Alasdair Roberts reveals his new video for ‘Pangs,’ the title track of his new album due for release tomorrow. Also don’t miss his UK and Ireland tour dates on which he’s joined by Stevie Jones and Alex Neilson.

Listen to The Food of Love Project, dedicated to Shakespeare’s legacy and featuring the likes of Alasdair Roberts, Kirsty Law, Rob St John, Dead Rat Orchestra, Stornoway, Thomas Truax, David Thomas Broughton and more.

Shirley Collins’ Lodestar performance at the Barbican is fresh and contemporary and avant-garde at times. The assembled musicians are nothing short of brilliant, the arrangements are in turns atmospheric, joyous, stirring and thrilling.

To mark the release of the William Shakespeare tribute album ‘The Food of Love’ (featuring some of the great names of folk music) we have an exclusive video premiere from acclaimed Scottish folk troubadour Alasdair Roberts.

Pangs finds Alasdair Roberts in a power trio with his long-time musical partners Alex Neilson and Stevie Jones, and along with guests Debbie Armour, Tom Crossley, Rafe Fitzpatrick and Jessica Kerr. Listen to The Downward Road, our Song of the Day.

With Wild Hog, The Furrow Collective have surpassed their excellent debut with a set of songs that is mature, intelligent and experimental. The quartet at the heart of this record, for all their differing styles, have hit upon something that has a rare sparkle to it. A deceptively simple, spell-bindingly beautiful record.

This weeks mix finds a strong Scottish contingent including two of Lau’s players with tracks from Aidan O’Rourke’s latest Imprint (E.P Series 2.0) and Martin Green’s Flit. Also included are two tracks from recently reviewed albums from Trail West and Iona Fyfe Band. Alongside these are some personal favourites that we’ve covered in the past as well as new offerings from The Driftwood Manor and Nick Jonah Davis’ House of …

A typically bold, distinctive and refreshing album from Alasdair that also proves he has an unerring ear for a successful collaboration. The importance of the unorthodox sounds added by Green cannot be overstated – they are further evidence that folk can and must adapt to – even embody – change.

We have the great pleasure in premiering ‘Waiting For P To Have a Vision’, the new digital single from Brighton-based artist and troubadour Jinnwoo (aka Ben Webb), an artist we featured in session in 2014.
