Under the name of All The Brave Hunters, Galway songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Alain McFadden, a member of award-winning folk group Ye Vagabonds, has shared his first solo single ‘Rising‘, also our Song of the Day.
“Rising was inspired by the idea that within every heart, there was a painted glass window, that you can look through but never fully know its warmth within. Reflecting through the glass at the darkening days of winter and by sinking into the darkness, we lift ourselves up and grow into the light.”
The song is taken from his EP ‘Painted Glass’, which will be out in March 2023. Rising is the opening track from which the EP title also appears to take its title from the lyric – “In every heart there’s a window frame/Painted glass against the rain.”
The accompanying video, showing snowy scenes from Engelberg in Switzerland, was directed, filmed and edited by Finn McFadden.
Musically, McFadden’s finger-style guitar opens, the notes played quite sparsely with Brían Mac Gloinn’s fiddle and harmonium offering a gentle drone backdrop above which McFadden’s captivating vocals take centre stage. Along the way, we are treated to some beautiful warm harmonies. It’s a spellbinding first offering, and we can’t wait to hear the rest.
Recorded in the hills of West Cork and inner-city Dublin, Alain collaborated with producer and colleague Brían Mac Gloinn (vocals, bouzouki, harmonium, fiddle) of Ye Vagabonds, Elva Carroll (vocals) and Nick Rayner (whose previous work includes records by Ye Vagabonds, Talos, Saint Sister, Anna Mieke), to help develop and bring these five original songs into being.
