We’re big fans, in case you didn’t guess! Arborea are Buck and Shanti who, amongst producing some of the most incredible music we play also did us a lovely mix just …
Allysen Callery has been playing on Folk Radio UK for quite a while now. We were bowled over by her album Hobgoblin’s Hat. Her music and lyrics are other-worldy and spellbinding. We were over-joyed therefore when she agreed to record this session which she stretched to five tracks instead of the usual four (a great bonus). It was recorded late at night by Myles Baer and she tells us they …
Charlie Parr holds an air of mystery about him. The story goes that one spring day in 1979, a young Charlie Parr made his way down to East Side Lake in Austin, Minnesota carrying a Johnson 9.9 outboard motor and half of a gallon of gas. His pockets were stuffed with stolen cans of Blatz. The motor did him no good at the lake since he didn’t have a boat, …

Matthew over at Song, By Toad has been making a great video diary of the Fence Collective’s Haarfest 2010. Needless to say, in typical Toad fashion things don’t always go according to plan. The Day Three video is below. There was a problem with the power supply and the workmen that turned up to fix it managed to spread the problem and then the gas board were called out…despite this …
Antony and the Johnsons have released a powerful new video to Thank You For You Love which we covered recently. The video is so open and honest, an expression of angst and refuge. Of suffering and pain, rejection and solace. Individuality amongst the fear of just that. The flash up of a sign stating: “Do You Want to Hurt Me?” summed it up for me…

Sufjan Stevens has released an 8-song, 60-minute EP for digital download via bandcamp. The EP titled All Delighted People will be available through itunes and amazon from Monday, but you can download. The EP, All Delighted People, is built around two different versions of Sufjan’s long-form epic ballad “All Delighted People,” a dramatic homage to the Apocalypse, existential ennui, and Paul Simon’s “Sounds of Silence.”
I first came across Matt Bauer in 2006 when he released an e.p. called Wasps and White Roses. It featured a neo-traditional version of Sea Lion Woman a traditional American folk song which hooked me. It led me on a bit of a musical journey which led to many other great artists including Alela Diane, Marie Sioux and Sam Amidon. I’ve been following and playing his music on Frukie since.
Swarming guitar fuzz, bass waves, Jana Hunter’s voice, and insistent drum throbs are the core components of Baltimore’s Lower Dens. Hunter, sometimes known for intimate, ghost-heavy weird-fi, is now writing and playing with a group that might get filed as new wave, or drone pop, or post-punk. With due deference to her solo work, we’re very glad.
