Tricky is amongst the leading lights of the Bristol music scene where trip-hop (Bristol Sound) orginated in the 90’s. Some great music came out of that scene from the likes of Massive Attack, Moorcheeba, Portishead, Bonobo and more. Tricky made his mark after leaving Massive Attack and forging ahead with his own music brand taking influences from British rock to soul and reggae. His new single ‘Murder Weapon’ is released …

A new arrival on the station is Cotton Jones. The music of Cotton Jones speaks of transition: the passage from one form, state of mind, style or place to another. Songs become doorways to the past, or windows that open on some unnamed future, where innocence can still exist and perfection is thrown to the wind.

I came across Maps and Atlases only recently on Fat Cat Records and was humbly impressed by their originality. Seeing as they have just recorded a heap of video sessions, including for Shake it Records in Cincinatti / Reggie’s and they have some UK tour dates coming up in October to coincide with the release of their album Perch Patchwork it seemed like a good a time as any to …

This press release just rolled in: Americana-folk warriors MEGAFAUN, have been chosen to curate, perform, and record songs/interpretations of Alan Lomax’s classic recordings “Songs of the South” at Duke University this September. Invited guests feature Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten and jazz big band Fight the Big Bull.

We stumbled across The Loom thanks to the good folk at Brooklyn Vegan who covered a recent Mercury Lounge gig which featured The Loom and another Frukie favourite, Lost in Trees. The Loom describe themselves as a six-piece indie rock band from Brooklyn that features male/female vocals, horns, guitars, banjo, ukulele, keys, and percussion. All sounds very straightforward and humble, but they have been attracting a lot of attention since …

We recently mentioned the forthcoming album from Breathe Owl Breathe titled Magic Central being released on Hometapes. They have released another free track for digestion called “Swimming” which according to Hometapes is already in your head.

We have been waiting a long time to see Arborea play and now finally they are back in the UK and will be even touching down in Bristol which is right on our doorstep! So we’re very very happy! We’re big fans, in case you didn’t guess! Arborea are Buck and Shanti who, amongst producing some of the most incredible music we play also did us a lovely mix just …

Allysen Callery has been playing on Folk Radio UK for quite a while now. We were bowled over by her album Hobgoblin’s Hat. Her music and lyrics are other-worldy and spellbinding. We were over-joyed therefore when she agreed to record this session which she stretched to five tracks instead of the usual four (a great bonus). It was recorded late at night by Myles Baer and she tells us they …

Charlie Parr holds an air of mystery about him. The story goes that one spring day in 1979, a young Charlie Parr made his way down to East Side Lake in Austin, Minnesota carrying a Johnson 9.9 outboard motor and half of a gallon of gas. His pockets were stuffed with stolen cans of Blatz. The motor did him no good at the lake since he didn’t have a boat, …

Brighton’s premier folk collective Willkommen Records have teamed up with South Coast independent music promoters Melting Vinyl for a second year following last years success to bring you another all day show. The venue is in a nature reserve on the outskirts of Brighton, a mere stroll for those who have partied hard the night before. Stanmer House is a beautifully restored, Grade I listed stately home built in 1722. …

Matthew over at Song, By Toad has been making a great video diary of the Fence Collective’s Haarfest 2010. Needless to say, in typical Toad fashion things don’t always go according to plan. The Day Three video is below. There was a problem with the power supply and the workmen that turned up to fix it managed to spread the problem and then the gas board were called out…despite this …

Antony and the Johnsons have released a powerful new video to Thank You For You Love which we covered recently. The video is so open and honest, an expression of angst and refuge. Of suffering and pain, rejection and solace. Individuality amongst the fear of just that. The flash up of a sign stating: “Do You Want to Hurt Me?” summed it up for me…
