It’s one thing to be able to witness a folk legend in action at close quarters these days. It’s quite another to see one in a cosy pub venue the size of your front room, with about 50 others. One of the best gigs I’ve experienced this century. Really.

Last night of the UK tour for Portland’s quirky and enduringly engaging folk-pop performer proved a warm and uplifting evening, despite the sense of foreboding and fragility running through new album The Lookout.

We catch up with Portland’s queen of minimalist Americana Laura Veirs and talk about life, songwriting, touring and The Lookout. “Here I am, it’s my tenth record, I’m 44, I have children. I mean, what am I doing? What should I be doing with my life?”
