Our latest Mixtape draws on some familiar faces and a few that have caught our attention recently. There are two appearances from Bonnie “Prince” Billy, both taken from his latest album We Are Together Again, released today (via Domino Records/No Quarter). The Children are Sick and Vietnam Sunshine are prime examples of the Louisville songwriter at his most communal and emotionally direct, a record rooted in the musical community surrounding him.
Gregory Uhlmann also appears twice, with Burnt Toast and Back Scratch from Extra Stars (International Anthem). As we noted in our recent coverage, Uhlmann has an extraordinary ability to coax non-guitar sounds from his instrument — rhythm-forward, processing-heavy, and yet full of pastoral warmth.
Elsewhere, Jesca Hoop contributes the beautifully titled Caravan, while Kris Drever brings Change — both artists whose songwriting rewards close listening. Adam Ross offers Berkeley Street, and Brown Wimpenny give us their experimental take on Raglan Road, one of the most celebrated songs in the Irish tradition.
SUSS provide the widescreen drift of Sunset II, a track that lives up to its name, and having featured many times on KLOF, Setting return with the intriguing Gum Bump. Trippers & Askers open proceedings with Kin, from his forthcoming album Tried to Do’s, and Bristol’s Riley/Radley close things out with the wonderfully named Enclave of Parisian Cash from their new album Hookahs of the Cave.
Press play and let it run.
