Tōth Shares “Easy” featuring the 85-voice Brooklyn Choir Project

Tōth performs "Easy" live with an 85-voice Brooklyn choir, turning the "And The Voice Said" highlight into a full-room affirmation.

Tōth turned Easy into a communal reckoning earlier this year, and now there’s video proof.

The Brooklyn songwriter (Alex Toth, also of Rubblebucket) has shared a live performance of Easy, recorded with the 85-voice Brooklyn Choir Project at the First Unitarian Congregational Society in Brooklyn. The sold-out show reworked songs from his acclaimed album And The Voice Said into a communal ritual — choir, band and audience included.

Easy comes from And The Voice Said, released February 27th via Egghunt/Northern Spy and co-produced by Caroline Rose, with a guest appearance from Kimbra. In our review, Thomas Blake called the album “a cracked, flawed and glorious vision,” and singled out Easy for its “effortless downtrodden slacker vibes.”

The choir’s involvement wasn’t a last-minute add-on. Back in February, while sharing the video for “Thoughts Are Like Clouds,” Tōth shared that he’d left the shoot early for “choir rehearsal (Brooklyn Choir Project is covering my last single, ‘Easy’)!” — so this performance has been months in the making.

On how it felt, Tōth says: “Getting to sing a new song of mine with 85 other incredible singers was a top life experience for me. I felt chills running up and down my entire body as their voices hit my back. I also think being a former Catholic made screaming in a giant church extra cathartic for me haha.”

The performance takes Easy from hushed verses to a full-choir climax, turning Tōth’s refrain — “I’m easy!” — from a private declaration into a group one. Jaren Feeley conducted and arranged the choir, Sean Hastings co-produced, and Steven Xia mixed. The backing band includes Jesse Cohen-Greenberg on pipe organ, Koa Ho on bass, Kabir Adhiya-Kumar and Simon Knudtson on drums, and a horn section of Gem Mercado, Sammy Mellman, Syl Debunion, Tree Palmedo and Sean Hastings.
