Tommy Oeffling has announced his eighth album, Neighbors, due October 30th on 22TWENTY, the New York label also home to Oracle Sisters, Flora Hibberd and Cornelia Murr. The Milwaukee songwriter has built a sizeable following since self-releasing his first album as a teenager, and today shares a video for lead single Daily on Eggshells.
The clip is directed, filmed and edited by Caiden Dohr, who also sings backing vocals on the track under his Dayfire Avenue name. It stars Ethan Bailey, Dohr, Robert Dohr and Oeffling himself, and arrives as Oeffling heads out on a US tour.
Neighbors follows 2025’s Picture of Health and takes its structure from James Joyce’s Ulysses, which Oeffling spent a college course studying week by week (check our recent Substack Post & Playlist on Joyce). Where Joyce spent hundreds of pages on a single day in Dublin, Oeffling compresses one Saturday in his own neighbourhood, Avenues West, into an album that runs from an 8am hangover through to a 2am to-do list, taking in a failed bar pick-up, a shopping trip’s balcony break, and roommates doing nothing much at all. “Everybody is alive and going through stuff, and what unites us is those mundane stretches of nothing,” he says. “It’s like slowing down time.”
Daily on Eggshells carries a private joke: Oeffling wrote lyrics his own friends can’t fully decode. “I guess the song is, as a whole, just about being nervous,” he says. “A lot of it is about not knowing where somebody is, too.”
As with most of his catalogue, Oeffling wrote, played and recorded Neighbors almost entirely alone, down to the hand claps, bringing in friends only for occasional backing vocals. Going in, he set himself one rule: every song had to sound different, while still sounding like him.
