A. Lee Edwards spent three decades fronting the Charlotte alt-country bands Lou Ford and The Loudermilks. His solo work strips that history back to its quietest essentials, and Without You — premiering here ahead of its release on 22nd July — is the latest glimpse of where it has taken him.
The song comes from Interpreting Heart Sounds, Vol. II, the sequel to Edwards’ solo debut. Where the first volume opened up a more reflective side of his writing, the second moves further inside it: a warm, string-forward sound in which space and restraint carry as much as the notes. Cello lines rise and fall like breath, but the centre is Edwards’ self-taught fingerpicking — patient, unadorned, holding each song steady.
“‘Without You’ was inspired by a line from an old newspaper editorial I carried folded up in my wallet for years. The song came from thinking about disappearing mill towns, fading dreams, lost love, and how a lot of the things that once made life feel hopeful and connected seem to be slipping away. It’s about personal loss, but also the feeling that an entire way of life is disappearing,” Edwards says.
The album was recorded at Echo Mountain Recording Studios in Asheville, North Carolina, and mixed by John Wood, whose credits run from Nick Drake to Fairport Convention, John Cale and Richard and Linda Thompson. Edwards fills out the arrangements with players from Western North Carolina’s deep bench: upright bassist Zack Page (a veteran of work with Billy Higgins, Delfeayo Marsalis and Eddie Daniels), fiddler Julian Pinelli, pedal steel player Ryan Stigman, pianist Taylor Pierson, harmony singer Amanda Neill, and cellists Lyle DeVitry and Franklin Keel.
Under the acoustic surface, Edwards keeps a pop songwriter’s ear — early Beach Boys harmonies, the bruised glow of Big Star, the soft craft of Bread — set against the plain-spoken shadow of Townes Van Zandt. He writes the way Raymond Carver and Gordon Lish did: small moments, said plainly, carrying more than they let on.
