Alex Dupree has shared I Can See Her In Your Eyes, a country duet with Jolie Holland and the third and final single from Talking to the Dog, out August 14th via Scissor Tail Records.
The song came from somewhere else first. Dupree wrote it while working on Dawn & Dupree, a duet project with Whitney Mower (They/Live), and the premise stuck: two people at the same relational dead end, seen from both sides. He’s still hung up on an old love; she can tell. The pleasure is in the language, the way each half of the conversation knows more than it says. Holland takes the second voice, and for Dupree that’s no small thing:
“I love country duets, they have so much narrative possibility. The initial spark for this song came while writing for a duet project with Whitney Mower (They/Live) called ‘Dawn & Dupree’. It’s two perspectives on the same relational dead-end — he’s still hung up on an old love, and she can tell. The fun comes from how the language works on both sides. Having Jolie Holland sing on this is a dream come true. She’s an absolute legend, and hearing her album ‘Catalpa’ in high school probably changed my life. At that time, I hadn’t heard anyone so tapped into the deep vein of American music. I didn’t know it was possible to still go there. Not as a genre thing, but as real, true embodiment. And she’s still doing it! Jolie is on another level.”
Talking to the Dog, produced by Michael Krassner, is Dupree’s first album since 2022’s Thieves, which KLOF covered on release. This single follows lead track New Meaning and his rework of Michael Hurley’s You’re a Dog, Don’t Talk to Me, both shared earlier this summer. The album arrives with an introduction by Matt Kivel, a Scissor Tail labelmate, who rates it a mid-career high — a record made fast, a band learning the songs in the room and following the energy where it went.
