The Philadelphia-based art-folk project @ (pronounced “at”) will release their second album, Autosmile, on 16 October via 4AD. It’s their first record for the label, and the nearly seven-minute title track lands today as the lead single, with a video directed by Sophia Feuer and Tyler Macri.
Victoria Rose and Stone Filipczak built @ out of long-distance song swaps, and Autosmile keeps the duo’s folk roots while reaching for something heavier. The title track turns a mysterious breakup into questions of demonology: interlocking harmonies and warm acoustic passages thicken as tambourine, guiro and blistering guitar leads push in. “Really excited to have this song out; it took a while and a few tries to capture in the way we wanted, and we hope you enjoy it,” the band say.
The album follows their 2021 debut, Mind Palace Music, which grew by word of mouth, and the 2024 EP Are You There God? It’s Me, @, a detour into more electronic territory. Since then @ have become an in-demand live act, supporting Snail Mail, Cameron Winter and Black Country New Road.
This autumn the duo tour North America, the UK and Europe, with some North American dates supporting 4AD labelmates YHWH Nailgun and This is Lorelei. Tickets go on sale this Friday, 26 June.
Autosmile runs to eleven songs and arrives on digital, CD and Soil Brown LP, with a 12×12 insert and signed photo print bundle available through Bandcamp and the 4AD store.
