Steve Gunn has announced Shape of a Wave, a four-song companion EP to his seventh studio album Daylight Daylight, due this Friday, April 10th via No Quarter. The set pairs two new songs with two Daylight Daylight tracks remixed by Pete “Sonic Boom” Kember of Spacemen 3.
To mark the announcement, Gunn has shared Kember’s remix of Nearly There — the track that opened Daylight Daylight as a lesson in sustained intensity built around the simplest of strummed chords and drawn-out strings. In Sonic Boom’s hands, it takes on new dimensions.
On having Kember remix his work, Gunn says: “Sonic Boom’s music has been in my ear for a long time, and it has shaped the way I hear and think about songs. Working with him feels like a deep moment, because his music has meant so much to me over the years. I’m so grateful that he has put his touch on these songs.”
The two new songs were again recorded with Daylight Daylight producer and collaborator James Elkington, with sessions taking place at both Gunn’s home studio and Elkington’s Nada Studios — a continuation of the partnership that defined Daylight Daylight, which KLOF Mag’s Thomas Blake called “an engrossing album of dignified beauty” in his review last November.
Shape of a Wave will be available both digitally and as a limited edition 12″. Gunn tours Europe throughout April and May, with more summer dates to be announced.
