Chris Brain has shared Kinds Of Kindness, the third single from his forthcoming fourth album Red Sun Rising, out May 1st via Big Sun Records. The track arrives with an accompanying video.
A familiar presence on these pages — from our premiere of the Steady Away single Please through to Glenn Kimpton’s glowing review of that album, an Off the Shelf feature, a review of New Light and coverage of his fothcoming album’s title track and Big Hill — the Yorkshire-based songwriter has steadily deepened his craft across four albums, each one marking a further step inward.
On the single, he shares:
“Kinds of Kindness is a fragile song based on my childhood and that is represented by the harmonics throughout, the instrumentation is supposed to convey a building of intensity and in the end forgiveness.”
Red Sun Rising groups a collection of songs rooted in the British pastoral tradition, navigating themes of yearning, restlessness and the desire for change, set against landscapes both literal and emotional. Brain describes the album’s central image as one of renewal: “The rising sun symbolising new life and fresh beginnings. At its core, it’s about hope and the feeling that something is waiting just around the corner, if I truly believe it. The songs lean into the repetitive rituals of life such as watching the sun rise or looking out onto the horizon, while also touching on the complexities that shape each of our individual paths.”
Red Sun Rising is released May 1st via Big Sun Records.
