White Fence has shared Unread Books, the second single from his forthcoming album, Orange, due April 24th via Drag City. A visualiser accompanies the track.
As we covered last month, Orange marks Tim Presley’s first White Fence release in seven years, produced by longtime collaborator Ty Segall at his Harmonizer II studio. Where lead single Your Eyes opened with gut-punching snare and sunny guitar, Unread Books operates in lower, murkier territory — a droning pop song of postmodern heartbreak, slung low and wired with hazy synths from Alice Sandahl of La Luz and the shuffling drums of Dylan Hadley (Kamikaze Palm Tree, Sharpie Smile).
The song channels a late-period Lennon sensibility, Presley’s re-routed 50s/60s/80s pop instincts filtered through distortion and longing. Lines like “No one changes their mind / their mind / Like you do” and “Take the unread books like you’ve done / and run” cut with a directness that suits the album’s broader promise: his most direct set of songs to date.
Speaking about Orange, Presley has said: “Love/loss, addiction/rehabilitation, and a good long look in the mirror (by way of a shop window reflection in San Francisco). But also the absurdity of life… I wanted to sing my little heart out. Sing life.”
Segall plays drums and handles production across the album, with Sandahl on keys and Hadley appearing on two tracks. Together they frame Presley’s rock and balladry in uncrowded arrangements, giving his voice room to carry the weight.
Orange arrives April 24th.
