Mikey Kenney has shared the video for On A Blue Day, the latest single taken from his highly praised 2025 album “Tiny Little Light” (Penny Fiddle Records). The album — which explores using the fiddle and melodic lines befitting traditional dance structures as the vehicle for Kenney’s songwriting — was reviewed on KLOF last December, where Glenn Kimpton called it “a bold, big-hearted album that cannot fail to make you smile.”
On A Blue Day is a tribute to fiddle music and fiddle players of days past. Kenney sings about the fiddle being a means to lift one out of depression, of a debt owed to those who have walked the path before him and how the memory and spirit of those players live on in the tunes. He approaches the instrument not as a means of expression but as a way of life.
The video was conceived, shot and produced by Ruby Ingleheart, who also created the video for Kenney’s earlier single Dandelion. It was filmed at two locations in Cornwall: the castle fort at Pendennis Point and the Touc Inn bar beneath the legendary Cornish Bank. The recording features Kenney singing and playing the fiddle simultaneously, accompanied by Michael Paul Metcalfe on drums and Awen Blandford on cello — the same drums-and-fiddle partnership that Kimpton identified as the key to the album:
“it does feel like the drums and fiddle partnership, recorded mostly live together in the same room to bring intimacy and immediacy to the music, is the key to the album and the springboard for the added arrangements to flourish..”
Kenney is about to embark on a UK tour celebrating Tiny Little Light six months after its release, having previously had to postpone dates after an accident which resulted in a broken shoulder.
