Bristol-based Tara Clerkin Trio have announced Somewhere Good, their new album due 5th June via World of Echo. The trio have shared the mesmerising title track today alongside a new video, which you can watch below.
The group — Tara Clerkin, Sunny Joe Paradisos, and Patrick Benjamin — have been steadily building one of the most distinctive catalogues in experimental British music since forming in 2020. Two mini-albums on World of Echo, In Spring (2021) and On The Turning Ground (2023), established a sound that draws on trip-hop, avant-pop, modern classical and kraut-folk, yet resists easy categorisation. Somewhere Good is their most fully realised work to date, spanning over forty minutes of boldly intuitive, cross-pollinating arrangements, WoE declare the trio are “somehow sounding more like themselves than ever before.”
Ryan Davis, writing in the album’s liner notes, describes the trio’s sound as built from “droning harmonium, upright bass, peculiarly accentuated wind instruments, acoustic guitar, hushed yet literally mighty keys,” combining to hypnotic effect. Despite inherently sombre subject matter — self-defeat, disease, displacement, gentrification — the album never wallows, instead allowing its improvisations ample space to breathe and take deeper hold on the listener’s imagination.
At its centre is Clerkin’s voice, a calming consistency threading through otherwise unpredictable terrain: subtly inspired melodies that act as the glue holding the whole restless enterprise together.
Somewhere Good is available digitally and on CD and LP, with a deluxe vinyl edition featuring a bonus 7″ with two exclusive tracks, limited to 500 copies via Bandcamp and World of Echo. The group tour the US later this month, with tickets on sale now.
