Simon Joyner has shared Vagabond, the first single and video from Tough Love, his nineteenth studio album, due May 22nd on 2-LP vinyl, CD and digital (with no Spotify release). The album is co-released by Grapefruit Records and Sophomore Lounge in the USA and by BB*ISLAND in Europe and the UK. The video for Vagabond is assembled from footage Joyner and Sara Adkisson Joyner shot while on the road.
Joyner has been making albums in Omaha since the early ’90s — nineteen of them now, each one slightly recalibrated, none of them quite like the last. His influence has threaded through several generations of songwriters, from Bright Eyes and Kevin Morby to the Lenkers, Oldhams, and Molinas that followed, though Joyner himself has remained a stubbornly independent figure, focused on the work rather than the mythology.
Tough Love follows 2024’s Coyote Butterfly, the autobiographical album Joyner made in the wake of his son’s death. Where that album dealt in direct, personal grief, Tough Love refracts the idea through fictional relationships — romantic, familial, political — setting everyday heartache alongside the betrayals of the American Dream. The longstanding touchstones are present — Cohen, Dylan, the Velvet Underground — but they keep shifting shape: acoustic songs pushed and prodded by electric guitars, rock tracks that veer between Loaded-era grooves and the rhythmic restlessness of Can, and a penultimate Anniversary Song where ghost vocals and microtonal synth blur the boundaries between folk and the avant-garde.
The album closes with its title track, a twenty-minute piece narrated from the perspective of Joyner’s departed son — a devastating reckoning with failure and guilt that eventually opens into something closer to grace.
