Satnam Galsian released Dishonour on March 8th to coincide with International Women’s Day, with all proceeds from pre-orders placed between February 6th and April 6th, 2026 donated to Karma Nirvana, a Leeds-based charity working to end honour-based abuse in the UK (Donations can also be made via enthuse: karmanirvana.enthuse.com/pf/dishonour).
The British-Asian singer-songwriter and progressive folk artist from Leeds has built a distinctive voice blending the rich tradition of Punjabi folk with contemporary, feminist storytelling. Her songs are deeply rooted in her personal experiences, drawing on her own journey of identity, belonging, and empowerment.
For Dishonour, Galsian has taken the Irish folk song She Moved through the Fair and reimagined it from the perspective of the woman protagonist, transforming the traditional ballad into a powerful commentary on honour-based violence. The acoustic version, recorded with Mac Volpe and mixed and mastered by Phil Snell, came about after the song received overwhelming responses at live shows and numerous fan requests.
“When I first encountered the original folk song She Moved through the Fair, I found myself wondering how the woman protagonist ended up dead after reassuring her love that her parents would not slight him for his lower social status,” Galsian explains. “I was inspired to write Dishonour as relationships disapproved of by families can be a trigger for honour-based abuse, when it’s thought that someone has brought shame or dishonour to themselves, their family or community.” Talking about the charity she chose to help support through sales of the single, she adds, “I’m delighted to be able to support Karma Nirvana with the sales from this single as they work tirelessly to try and bring an end to this type of violence.”
Galsian was recently recognised by the Asian Standard as one of Leeds’ most influential South Asian people for her work amplifying women’s voices and supporting community wellbeing. The judges praised her music as “a powerful lens for social reflection and change.”
