The Notwist have unveiled “Projectors,” the latest single from their forthcoming album News from Planet Zombie, arriving March 13th via Morr Music—and it’s shaping up to be one of the year’s essential releases. The track showcases the German trio at their most texturally inventive, offsetting burbling electronic sound design against country-tinged songwriting that feels both organic and uncanny.
“Projectors” leans into folk and country influences while maintaining The Notwist’s experimental edge, anchored by brass interludes that give the composition an unexpected warmth. The single features the full cast of album guests: Enid Valu on vocals, Haruka Yoshizawa on harmonium, Chris Xiao on clarinet, and Mathias Götz on trombone. These additional voices fold into the band’s expanded live formation—core members Markus and Micha Acher and Cico Beck, joined by Theresa Loibl, Max Punktezahl, Karl Ivar Refseth, and Andi Haberl—creating layered arrangements that feel both intimate and expansive.
The Notwist describe the track’s conceptual framework with characteristic oddness: “‘Projectors’ is a folk and country-influenced song with brass interludes featuring all of the album’s guests. The lyrics, which are about getting through difficult times, are written as if Rutger Hauer could sing them in Blade Runner.” It’s a fitting reference for a band whose work has always navigated the border between the human and the synthetic, though The Notwist inevitably choose warmth over coldness, flesh over circuitry.
News from Planet Zombie marks the first time since 1995’s 12 that The Notwist recorded together as a full band in the studio. Tracked over one week at Munich’s Import Export, a non-profit arts space, the album embraces a live, collaborative energy that allows songs to breathe and mutate. The record also features covers of Neil Young’s “Red Sun” and “How the Story Ends,” slotting seamlessly into the album’s narrative about navigating difficult times with warmth and generosity.
