Chicago-based artist Gia Margaret has officially announced her highly anticipated new album, Singing, set for release on April 24th via Jagjaguwar. Accompanying the announcement is the lead single and video, “Everyone Around Me Dancing,” a track that beautifully encapsulates Margaret’s journey from silence back to song. After a vocal injury sidelined her for years, during which she mastered the intricate, “homey” ambient textures of acclaimed instrumental records like Mia Gargaret and Romantic Piano, Margaret finally returns to her physical voice (read ‘How Gia Margaret Found Her Voice by Losing It‘). This marks her first vocal-centric project since 2018’s There’s Always Glimmer, merging her newfound ambient sensibilities with traditional pop structures.
In the lead single, Margaret explores the dichotomy of isolation and observation. “Everyone Around Me Dancing” finds the narrator on the periphery of a party, reflecting on a body that restricts communal joy but facilitates deep self-knowledge. Margaret describes the track as a “reflection on feeling isolated and the comfort found in that isolation,” offering a moment of stillness amidst a “scary and loud world.” The music retains the jeweler-like sensitivity of her instrumental work, with piano lines as delicate as breath on glass.
Recorded between 2024 and 2025 across London, Eau Claire, and Chicago, Singing features an impressive roster of collaborators, including Guy Sigsworth, David Bazan, Amy Millan, and S. Carey. Despite the heavy-hitting guest list, Margaret remains the captain of her ship, co-producing much of the record with longtime collaborator Doug Saltzman. The process was one of healing and spiritual realignment; Margaret notes that by the album’s conclusion, she felt her “throat chakra opening,” signaling the end of a long cycle of recovery. To support the release, Margaret has also announced an extensive 2026 North American and EU/UK tour, marking a triumphant “beginning again” for one of indie music’s most evocative voices.
