Anjimile releases ‘Waits For Me‘, the second single from his upcoming album You’re Free to Go, out March 13th. The track arrives alongside a new video and marks another intimate step toward the North Carolina-based singer-songwriter’s most open-hearted work yet.
Waits For Me centers on a powerful reflection of childhood identity. “When I was a little girl, I wanted to be free… When I was a little boy, I wanted to be real,” Anjimile sings, his voice carrying both weight and warmth as he affirms and soothes his inner child. Built around acoustic guitar, glimmering synths, and bright percussion, the song balances searching introspection with an undeniable sense of light—a quality that runs throughout the album’s focus on self-expression and healing.
The single follows Like You Really Mean It, a luminous lead track overflowing with tenderness, and last November’s standalone Auld Lang Syne II, which traced themes of resilience and hard-fought freedom. Where Anjimile’s previous album The King leaned into intricacy and complexity, You’re Free to Go unfolds more organically under producer Brad Cook (Waxahatchee, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Mavis Staples). The album features contributions from Nathan Stocker (Hippo Campus), Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver), and Sam Beam (Iron & Wine), whose music deeply influenced the record even before his guest appearance.
Crafted over years marked by profound transformation—from breakups to new love, grief to renewal—the album asks what happens when you let go and let love in. Melodically, it evokes late-’90s alternative pop filtered through folk sensibilities, while Anjimile’s voice carries new depth, shaped in part by his ongoing hormonal therapy. “The past two years have been a deeply transitional point in my life,” he explains.
Anjimile has also announced a March residency at the Fuzzy Needle in Durham, North Carolina, along with US tour dates for May and June. Tickets go on sale this Friday, February 13th, at 10am local.
