As the world grapples with the unending chaos of a new year, guitarist Tashi Dorji has issued a defiant, meditative rallying cry. His latest single, “burn the throne,” serves as the second glimpse into his forthcoming album, low clouds hang, this land is on fire, arriving January 30th via Drag City.
Departing from the tumultuous acoustic improvisations of his previous works, Stateless and we will be wherever the fires are lit, Dorji now wades into a pool of electric guitar ambience. “burn the throne” emerges from absolute darkness, draped in wistful halos of reverb that slowly sharpen into a beacon of light. Despite the song’s restive energy in its final section, Dorji maintains a languid, disciplined air—a measured, mournful approach that reflects the gravity of its title. It is a “declaration of war rooted unshakably in peace.”
A mesmerising monochrome video by Philippe Léonard, the renowned film projectionist for Godspeed You! Black Emperor accompanies the track. A longtime friend of Dorji, Léonard subtitles the visual as: “River flow, water into water, not a loop but a continuum.”
Drag City have shared that Tashi will embark on a run of North American shows heading into February, tickets links here, and a welcome return to European stages very soon!
