Lande Hekt has quietly cemented her status as one of the UK’s most essential underground songwriters. Following the critical success of Going To Hell (2021) and House Without a View (2022), Hekt returns on January 30th (via Tapete Records) with her most confident album to date, “Lucky Now.”
Produced by Matthew Simms (Wire, It Hugs Back), the record finds Hekt embracing a newfound maturity. While her signature conversational indie-pop remains, “Lucky Now” dives deeper into 1980s jangle-pop influences like The Pastels and The Bats. The result is a sound defined by ecstatic melodies and tactile guitars that mirror Hekt’s shift toward a more grounded, grateful perspective.
“I’ve tried to think less about how things are coming across,” Hekt shares, “and just write songs that make me feel connected to myself.”
The title track and accompanying video, made by Mina Owen and filmed in Scarborough in January 2026, serve as a poignant introduction to an album centred on “the return”—to joy, to oneself, and to Hekt’s hometown of Exeter. Hekt shares:
‘Although I list some pretty specific things in this song, it is aimed to be a broad song about personal freedom and moving onto better things. The specific landmarks I have listed refer to getting a touring visa denied right before a big tour, changing the direction of my then band’s career, a fire that burned down our local venue that I worked at and near enough lived at leading to a drinking problem and then getting sober! The words in the pre-chorus are “crisp packet in the storm” and not “Chris Packham in the storm” – the song is not in any way about The Really Wild Show.
Beyond domesticity and personal reflection, the album sees Hekt return to political songwriting on tracks like “Circular,” rejecting the disillusionment of recent years. From the hope-infused “Rabbits” to the vulnerable “Middle of the Night,” Lucky Now is a bridge between who Hekt was and the artist she has become.
