French-Algerian icon Souad Massi has returned with “Samt” (Silence), the mesmerising first single from her highly anticipated forthcoming album, Zagate, set for release on March 6, 2026 (BackingTrack /Proper Distribution). Accompanied by an evocative music video directed by Yann Orhan, the track serves as a captivating introduction to what promises to be Massi’s most liberated and outspoken work to date.
“Samt” is the album’s opening track, but listeners should not mistake the title for passivity. Far from a muted withdrawal, Massi redefines silence as a spiritual refuge—a necessary breath of peace amidst the noise and turmoil of the modern world. The song is built upon a hypnotic Afrobeat loop, layered with the distinct guitar and percussion work of producer Justin Adams (Robert Plant, Tinariwen). Bolstered by Guy Nsangue on bass and the piercing, emotive call of Sylvain Barou’s zurna (a double-reed woodwind), Massi’s voice rises with a quiet, intense power.

The single sets the stage for Zagate, a title derived from the French expression “ça se gâte,” meaning “things are getting worse.” This linguistic play reflects Massi’s dual heritage between Algiers and France, exploring themes of anger, revolt, and hope. Recorded predominantly in the UK, the album reunites Massi with Adams, who produced her acclaimed previous record, Sequana. The project features a stellar lineup, including John Baggott (Massive Attack) and Billy Fuller, as well as guest appearances from rappers Youssoupha and Gaël Faye.
Blending folk, rock, and poetry, Zagate affirms Massi’s reputation as the “bitter-sweet voice of exile” while pushing her sound into new, intense territories. Fans can catch Souad Massi performing this new material live at the Barbican in London on May 9.
“Samt” is out now. Zagate releases March 6, 2026, via BackingTrack/Proper Distribution.
