The Noisy recently announced the release of ‘The Secret Ingredient is Even More Meat,’ a deluxe edition of their acclaimed debut album. The album drops tomorrow, October 24th, via Audio Antihero (Frog / Avery Friedman / Magana / CIAO MALZ). This expanded collection features new and reimagined songs from the Philadelphia-based group, which was founded by award-winning poet Sara Mae (they/them).
To mark the release, the band have released a series of videos, the latest being Tony Soprano, which you can watch below. The video was directed and edited by Sam Cush. The stunning makeup artistry was by Miss Thing, and the video features Sara Mae, Vyette Tiya, Daniel Sohn, Catherine Ashley, Alex Bruce, Kirsten Wise, and Kevin Connolly.
Sara Mae shared:
“The deluxe album builds on and crystallizes what More Meat is about: an indie rock album that also reaches towards country and pop, and a lyric sensibility that is unable to be anything but honest.
“Tony Soprano” was initially written as a really internal, quiet, lo-fi song. Having lived longer with this grief and been there for people I love who are grieving a loved one, I wanted to think about the collective experience of grieving, how we hold each other through difficult moments. We talked about form mirroring content, with a swelling choral arrangement inspired by Perfume Genius’s “Otherside”, and both synth and grand piano, sort of like generations talking to one another.
For the video, we had a lot of last-second changes that amounted to making something really personal with a lot of people I love. I made Gram’s recipe for pizzelles the day before, and got to work with Miss Thing again for a drag look that she said was one of her proudest she’d done for us so far. The first take was just me and Sam, with me delivering the lyrics to the camera, and I think I was able to really just talk to Gram. I’m so lucky I had Sam with me on this project, because it’s especially close to my heart. I’m so glad we got to give this arrangement of the song, which was really Danielle Sohn’s brainchild, some extra shine. It’s meant to talk about the collective experience of grief and I think having my friends sing on it, my friends star in it and eat the food I made, just felt like a particularly poetic and special experience. This one means a great deal to me.”

In addition to the upcoming deluxe reissue, The Noisy are currently working on LP2, while Sara Mae also recently published their award-winning second poetry chapbook, ‘Phantasmagossip,’ through YesYes Books, which they promoted with a multi-state reading tour.
