Folktronica pioneers Tunng are concluding a massive 20th-anniversary year with the release of their beautifully psychedelic new single and video, ‘Anoraks’, which arrived on October 22nd via Full Time Hobby. The new track serves as a final artistic statement before the band embarks on a string of headline dates across the UK and in Paris this November (dates below).
The new release follows their critically acclaimed anniversary album, Love You All Over Again, released in January and supported by a completely sold-out European and UK tour.
‘Anoraks’ finds the band in classic form, wrapping a lucid, dream-like story in nostalgic folk textures. Built on a bed of intertwining acoustic guitars, dreamy electronics, and haunting percussion, the track is a perfect encapsulation of the sound Tunng has cultivated for two decades. Impressively, this sonic unity was achieved remotely, with band members recording their parts separately in Sweden, Margate, and London.
The song’s creation, however, almost didn’t happen. Vocalist Sam Genders explains that the band’s usual writing method—where Mike Lindsay sends music for Genders to write over—hit a snag. “For reasons I can’t explain Mike’s beautiful piece of music didn’t immediately inspire a song,” Genders admits. He was about to suggest they use it as an instrumental when the story “popped” into his head, “a bit like a dream.”
For Lindsay, the track required finding the right headspace. “It took me a while to get my head back into Tunng world,” he shares, noting the difference between a standalone single and a full album. Once he was in that world, the music “pinged out.”
This layered, intricate assembly is the band’s hallmark. Lindsay previously detailed this meticulous approach in a Track-by-Track breakdown of Love You All Over Again for KLOF Mag, explaining how the album’s complex sounds came together. ‘Anoraks’ was a similar process, with Lindsay weaving in remote recordings from Becky, Phil, Marty, and Ash to complete the soundscape.
Genders concludes, “I think it’s about how we go through experiences with the people in our lives and we can’t quite see the direction they are shaping us in. A kindness might teach us the value of kindness, but then so might an experience of cruelty. There’s a strange magic at play everywhere and at all times. And most of all it’s about friends having adventures and the joy of connecting with other people, even if it’s scary sometimes”.
