Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore have announced their new collaborative album, Tragic Magic, set for release on January 16th via InFiné. To mark the occasion, the duo have shared the evocative new single, “Melted Moon,” and announced an extensive North American, UK, and EU tour for 2026.
Tragic Magic finds the two artists in a sublime, freeform dialogue between Barwick’s ethereal vocals and Lattimore’s expressive harp. The seven-song collection is a poignant meditation on tragedy, wonder, and the healing power of shared experience. Co-produced by Trevor Spencer (Fleet Foxes, Beach House), the album was recorded in just nine days in Paris, a testament to the pair’s profound musical connection. The sessions were deeply influenced by the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, which were still weighing on their community.
The album’s creation was uniquely shaped by their access to the historic instrument collection at the Philharmonie de Paris’ Musée de la Musique. Lattimore selected harps dating from 1728 to 1873, while Barwick utilised iconic analog synthesizers like the Roland JUPITER-8 and Sequential Circuits PROPHET-5. “We wanted to honor the past while making music that we feel is a true expression of ourselves,” Barwick explains.
New single “Melted Moon” directly confronts the recent wildfires. Over Lattimore’s looping harp, Barwick’s voice, uncharacteristically clear of effects, sings with haunting hope: “Under the melted moon / The lights are all out… You may never go home again / At least not the home you know.” The track arrives with a live performance video filmed in San Diego. Throughout Tragic Magic, Barwick and Lattimore masterfully locate beauty within turmoil, creating a timeless and deeply resonant work.
