Jim White, long the alchemical force in Dirty Three and the intuitive, textural pulse for collaborators from Bill Callahan to Marisa Anderson, continues his startling solo trajectory with Inner Day, which lands tomorrow, October 24th, via Drag City.
If his first album, All Hits: Memories, was a breakthrough forty years in the making, Inner Day confirms the establishment of a new, deeply personal vehicle. Working again with collaborator Guy Picciotto, White deepens his exploration of self-dialogue. The album is built on expressionistic duets between his drum kit and keyboards. He translates his “deep percussive intuition” into keyboard phrases, treating the keys as an extension of the drumhead, then responding in kind.
Today’s new single, “Two Ruffys,” exemplifies this new state. It’s an ambient, pulsing weave of piano, synth, and White’s inimitable kit work. Named for a place near his late father’s home, the track scores a “feverish sense of disconnection,” meditating on the dual states of life and loss without offering easy resolution. The video, directed by Anna White, captures this liminality, pulling the viewer into a hypnotic countryside drive.
Inner Day is described as a “state of nature: peace and tension, rest and disquiet”, and “Two Ruffys” is its disquieting, beautiful wind.
Inner-Day is released on October 24th, 2025 via Drag City.
