Australian guitarist D.C Cross has released his first live album, a recording of a recent gig at Red House in Earlwood, Sydney, a venue run by Nick Shimmin, who also ran People’s Republic. As the notes to this release reveal, recording a live album always comes with some trepidation, as it captures all with no discretion, including musician and equipment errors, and not forgetting the unpredictable audience. As Cross says, “Sometimes the guitars play up with the crazy open tunings, roofs leak, children cry, drunks talk over my music,” but this gig went without a hitch.
As you’d expect, there are live renditions of numbers from Darren’s latest album Glookies Guit, praised by KLOF Mag’s Glenn Kimpton as his most accomplished work to date, as well as Wizrad (“a must for fans of the more experimental and adventurous side of the solo acoustic genre, as well as those who enjoy serious acoustic guitar flexing) and more.
He also continues his trend of writing songs about rivers (something you apparently do once you pass the age of 45) with a premiere of his latest river song: Die Unterströmung (The Rhine).
Here he is performing No Old Man from his album Wizrad:
Live at the Red House is out today (October 14th, 2025).
