Our Song of the Day is A Raga Called John, the new single from Indiana-raised, Manchester-based Etta Helfrich, aka Black Brunswicker, which was released a few days ago. John Fahey and Pelt inspired the song, and, in an Instagram post, they shared that the main riff heard throughout was inspired by Fahey’s “Sunflower River Blues.” While there are later versions, it first appeared on Fahey’s 1963 album, “Death Chants, Breakdowns and Military Waltzes”, and also appeared in a 1974 compilation album, “John Fahey / Leo Kottke / Peter Lang.”
The track was recorded by Black Brunswicker in 2019 along with nine other tracks. While they then “kind of forgot about it”, this will thankfully be rectified on an upcoming album scheduled for some time next year.
“The album got shelved, and I moved on and continued writing and releasing new music. Honestly, I never thought these tunes would come out as I don’t like returning to older things I’ve written, but I’m glad they finally coming out now.” So are we. Enjoy this nature-inspired beauty and tribute to Fahey.
Side Note on Pelt
In contrast, for those new to Pelt, the group released an album in 2001 titled Ayahuasca (VHF), which featured the three-part “A Raga Called John” in tribute to Fahey. On this album, the band featured Jack Rose, Mike Gangloff and Patrick Best alongside guests including Ian Nagoski and Jason Bill. Part III was the most intense and longest, at 25 minutes.
