Kentucky-based singer-songwriter Joan Shelley has shared a gentle yet profound new single and video, “Here In The High and Low,” a beautiful prelude to her seventh album, Real Warmth, set for release this Friday, September 19th via No Quarter.
The track is a masterful collaboration, with Shelley’s serene guitar and vocals weaving through Ben Whitely’s bass, organ, and electric guitar, Philip Melanson’s drums, Matt Kelley’s Wurlitzer, and Karen Ng’s ethereal flute. A particularly touching addition is the backing vocals from Shelley’s three-year-old daughter, Tayla, which adds a layer of familial intimacy to the already heartfelt sound.
The accompanying video, directed by Cyrus Moussavi and Brittany Nugent, is a visually stunning exploration of growth and time. Moussavi notes they aimed to capture “the perspective of a young seedling coming up against ‘future ruins’ both ancient and modern.” This poetic vision perfectly complements the song’s reflective nature.
Real Warmth follows the critically lauded The Spur.
