Last month, we shared the news of claire rousay‘s new album, a little death, set for release on October 31st on Thrill Jockey. Today, she shares her latest single, “somewhat burdensome“, a masterclass in textural sound design, weaving together shimmering piano and guitar melodies with ambient drones and intimate field recordings. On the piece, rousay elaborates: “somewhat burdensome’s construction took place over 15 months. what started as an improvised guitar recording made in a basement studio was soon growing as field recordings from my home kitchen & garage, piano recorded in my friend Walt’s studio, and homemade electronics were added. This piece feels simultaneously playful and deeply reflective”
The single is accompanied by a visual piece she constructed that mirrors the album’s focus on recordings captured at dusk. This focus is central to a little death, an album that Rousay calls a “return to my core solo practice.”
rousay will be touring extensively in support of the album, with shows in Vancouver, a hometown release show in LA on October 24th, and an NYC show on November 22nd. a little death promises to be a deeply personal and sonically rich exploration of the quiet beauty and disquiet of twilight.
