Global-folk outfit Mishra are set to release ‘Turn O Spinning Wheel’, their vibrant new album and first collaboration with renowned Indian classical/Sufi vocalist Deepa Shakthi, on October 17th, 2025. The project expertly weaves the threads of Mishra’s signature English folk sound with Indian classical influences and the soul-stirring euphoria of Shakthi’s Sufi singing, creating a truly captivating cross-cultural soundscape.
Leading the announcement is the hypnotic new single, ‘Kite’, which releases on August 11th. The track is a masterful blend of instrumental and vocal textures, built upon the rhythmic structure of a three-part Irish jig. Ford Collier’s low whistle melody winds around the earthy, oud-like timbre of Kate Griffin’s cello banjo. When presented with the tune, Shakthi envisioned a kite fluttering in the wind; the resulting piece features a stunning vocal dialogue between Griffin and Shakthi that explores this image, before subsiding for Shakthi’s stirring Hindi verse.
The collaboration began during an Arts Council-funded UK tour in 2023, where the material for the album was developed. ‘Turn O Spinning Wheel’ reimagines the boundaries of UK folk, incorporating Indian rhythmic and melodic concepts into new arrangements of classic qawwali, Punjabi folk, and traditional English songs. For the album, founding members Griffin and Collier, along with their collective, brought in producer Stuart McCallum (The Cinematic Orchestra, The Breath) to help sharpen their ideas, resulting in a sound that combines tight arrangements with the trance-like potency of a live qawwali performance.
This album unites the Celtic Connections award-winning Mishra with Shakthi, a formidable vocalist whose career includes collaborations with legends like Ravi Shankar and George Harrison. The band will support the release with an extensive UK tour this autumn.
