Hannah Frances has announced her new album, Nested in Tangles, will be released on October 10th via Fire Talk. The composer, vocalist, guitarist, and poet has also shared the video for the lead single, “Surviving You,” and details of a headlining tour to support the release.
Nested in Tangles was written in the wake of her critically acclaimed album, Keeper of the Shepherd, and delves into complex themes of familial estrangement and emotional trauma. Frances, alongside her long-time collaborator Kevin Copeland, also enlisted Daniel Rossen of Grizzly Bear to produce and arrange two tracks. The album’s compositions are sprawling and dynamic, drawing influence from contemporary classical composers and ’70s progressive rock, featuring contributions from horn, wind, and string musicians.
The lead single, “Surviving You,” is a poignant reflection on generational trauma and self-preservation. In a self-directed video filmed by Derrick Alexander, Frances explores the emotional turmoil of confronting past harm. The video also features longtime friend and collaborator Sarah Clausen, who also contributes saxophone and bass clarinet on the track.
She explains the song is a “personal account of receiving harm from people who have projected their own pain onto me, who refuse to see themselves or take accountability for the impact of their actions.” The track is a powerful anthem for those learning to “affirm their lived experience” and move beyond survival mode.
Frances’s new album is a testament to her journey of disentanglement and self-actualisation. Through layers of natural imagery and unflinching lyrical honesty, she navigates the complex process of re-parenting herself and caring for her inner child. As she declares in the opening track, “I am tender heart and jagged hand // I am a bird, and a stone, and a fragile bone, and I am here to listen, and love the child I have always been.”
Nested in Tangles is a courageous and hopeful work, demonstrating a path to transfigure pain into a new, embodied wholeness. Frances begins her EU/UK tour this week, with tickets for all dates on sale now.
