Ambient composer Emily A. Sprague has announced her new album, Cloud Time, set for release on October 10th via RVNG Intl. The album chronicles an audio-spiritual journey through Japan, recorded during her long-awaited debut tour of the country in the fall of 2024.
Cloud Time is composed of environmental improvisations, captured in the moment and for the moment. Sprague stripped back her usual instrumentation, surrendering to the energy of each space and allowing it to guide her performances. The result is a series of deeply present and responsive musical dialogues—postcards from an eternal now. The album is described as a voyage of “psychic wayfaring,” an exchange between space, listener, and the activating power of live performance.
To mark the announcement, Sprague has shared the lead single, “Tokyo 1,” accompanied by a serene visual from long-time collaborator V Haddad. The track channels the spirit of the tour’s inaugural stop, its spacious, cycling drifts embodying the emotional arc of an evening that Sprague says initiated a “profoundly healing and impactful journey.” Resounding with warm, welcoming tones, the piece is a testament to music created with intention and care.
Rather than emerging from a void, the album’s improvisational nature comes from a place of “unknowing,” a state where Sprague is both fully present in and disappearing from the music she creates. Cloud Time promises a unique collection of recordings that distil the energetic possibilities of each lived moment. The album will be available on vinyl, Japanese import CD, and digital formats.
