Following the release of his new album Weight Away earlier this month, Yorkshire’s Lukas Creswell-Rost has shared a new video for the track “Correspondent”. The album, out now on Wayside & Woodland Recordings, is a culmination of ideas formed during a 15-year stay in Berlin, but recorded and finalised after his return to the UK.
The song “Correspondent” elegantly captures the album’s reflective mood. Creswell-Rost explains the title’s origin from the BBC Radio 4 programme ‘From Our Own Correspondent’. The concept merged with a poignant thought on loss: “if someone has passed on, they might as well be based on the other side of the world… like a correspondent sending back reports as memories.” This idea of places retaining a “special energy” after someone is gone is a central theme. The track’s musical core, featuring the drumming of long-term collaborator James Yates, was recorded live back in 2017. After initially dismissing his own performance, Creswell-Rost revisited the raw takes years later, adding new layers to complete the song.
The video continues a visual theme from the previous single, ‘Spiral Island’, featuring scenes of the artist walking through various evocative landscapes. Filmed during a recent tour of Germany and the Swiss Alps, the collected shots are intended to build a narrative that is “more than the sum of their parts.”
“Correspondent” is a perfect gateway into the world of Weight Away. The album deftly balances heavy lyrical themes of loss and mental health with musically playful and densely layered arrangements. It’s a compelling juxtaposition, resulting in an ambitious and emotionally resonant journey that finds catharsis in looking back.
