This week’s Monday Morning Brew playlist opens with Cyril Cyril, a duo originating from Geneva, Switzerland, featuring Cyril Yeterian and Cyril Bondi. Yeterian is also the founder of the excellent Bongo Joe record label and store. Their Geneva record store features a terrace and a Café where they host regular, free music events.
For those wondering, the label is named after the American street musician George ‘Bongo Joe’ Coleman (1923 – 1999), who played on a battered 55-gallon drum. In 1968, the late Arhoolie founder Chris Strachwitz used a portable recorder to capture Coleman’s playing. One song from that session, “Innocent Little Doggy,” became an underground hit in Texas and in the UK, where the BBC aired the song repeatedly.
We’ve covered a number of Bongo Joe releases on KLOF Mag over the years, including artists Alice, Madalitso Band, Meridian Brothers, and the Haitian-Belgian combo Chouk Bwa & The Ångstromers. The latter joined forces in 2016 and have continued to refine their music to the point where their fiery and frenzied sounds are more aligned with the percussive trance rites of Chouk Bwa’s homeland – Gonaïves, the heartland of Haitian Vodou and the birthplace of the country’s independence. Their mizik rasin (roots music) is steeped in the profound spirituality of the lakou temples, the revolutionary history of their hometown, and the African heritage of its people.
