Kieran Hebden (Four Tet) and acclaimed guitarist William Tyler have unveiled “Spider Ballad,” a sublime new single from their forthcoming collaborative album, 41 Longfield Street Late ‘80s. Set for a September 19th release on Eat Your Own Ears Recordings. The single lives up to the duo’s forward focus, as Tyler’s deconstructed guitar hangs like a ghost over this shimmering piece of psychedelic IDM, perfectly poised for late-summer listening.
The project grew from an unexpected bond. Despite their different musical worlds, Hebden and Tyler discovered a shared, formative influence: the ‘80s American country and folk music introduced by their fathers. Artists like Lyle Lovett and Nanci Griffith became a surprising common language. “I was kinda shocked (in the best way) that he was so versed in ‘80s Americana,” Tyler admits.
Their process involved recording Tyler’s guitar improvisations in a Los Angeles studio. Hebden then spent nearly two years digitally deconstructing the recordings. “I’d take it all home to my computer and bring it into my other world,” Hebden explains. The resulting sound merges organic nostalgia with futuristic textures, creating what Tyler calls a “very forward focused” recontextualization of their shared musical upbringing, a gift from their fathers.
41 Longfield Street Late ‘80s is in stores worldwide September 19, 2025 (Eat Your Own Ears Recordings/Temporary Residence Ltd).
