Jeff Tweedy, the ever-prolific songwriter and frontman of Wilco, has announced the release of a new, sprawling triple album titled Twilight Override, set to arrive worldwide on September 26th via his own dBpm Records. The announcement is accompanied by the release of four new tracks: “One Tiny Flower,” “Out In The Dark,” “Stray Cats in Spain,” and the radio single, “Enough.”
Arriving five years after his pandemic-era reflection, Love Is The King, the ambitious three-disc Twilight Override is a testament to the power of creativity in the face of what Tweedy calls “overwhelming darkness.” The album was self-produced and recorded by Tweedy at his Chicago studio, The Loft, with longtime collaborator Tom Schick handling engineering and mixing. The record features a host of Chicago-based musicians, including James Elkington, Sima Cunningham, Macie Stewart, and Liam Kazar, as well as Tweedy’s sons, Spencer and Sammy.
In a candid statement, Tweedy described the album as an effort to counteract a pervasive sense of decline. “Creativity eats darkness,” he stated. “Twilight Override is my effort to overwhelm it right back. Here are the songs and sounds and voices and guitars and words that are an effort to let go of some of the heaviness and up the wattage on my own light.”
The four lead singles offer a glimpse into the album’s thematic and musical breadth. “One Tiny Flower” is a propulsive, whimsical narrative, while “Out In The Dark” reflects on the creative process itself.
“Stray Cats in Spain” is a deeply personal track, and the contemplative closer, “Enough,” serves as what Tweedy calls a “summation” of the album’s journey.
In conjunction with the album release, Tweedy has announced an extensive full-band tour across North America and Europe, kicking off in October. Tickets for all dates will go on sale July 18th at 10 a.m. local time. While not intentionally a concept album, Tweedy acknowledges that a narrative of past, present, and future emerged through the sequencing of the three distinct chapters of Twilight Override.
