Singer-songwriter Chris Staples has unveiled his latest single and accompanying video, “A Cold New York Morning,” a poignant standout from his newly released album, Don’t Worry (August 5th). The track, a late addition to the record, emerged from a sudden burst of inspiration. “I was pretty much done with my record I thought,” Staples explains. “I walked out to my shed and wrote this one in about 15 minutes. I just wanted to write a story about someone struggling with a morally ambiguous choice. A song version of the trolley problem cartoon.”
The visually compelling music video, directed by Colin Earner, effectively captures the stark and contemplative mood of the song, bringing to life the internal conflict at its heart.
“A Cold New York Morning” is a perfect entry point into the world of Don’t Worry. The album was born from a period of stillness in Staples’ life in Richmond, VA, allowing for deep reflection on past experiences. The ten-track collection, recorded and produced in his home studio, features collaborations with artists like Kyle Crane, Alan Parker, Daniel Walker, and Kylie Dailey. The album’s unhurried arrangements and introspective lyrics offer listeners the same sense of peace Staples found in its creation, exploring themes of regret, growth, and quiet celebration with a gentle and reassuring touch.
