UPDATE: July 28th – We have compiled an FAQ to address the most frequently asked questions about the new KLOF Subscription. You can read it here.
As 2025 marks KLOF Mag’s 21st Anniversary, it seems fitting that we look back, as well as forward. We began our journey in 2004 as a 24/7 internet radio station, followed soon after by a music blog that complemented the music, providing insights into the artists and music we played. Since then, the focus has shifted; we are now a busy, independent online magazine with on-demand mixtapes and playlists complementing our writing. Back then, the World Wide Web was very different; music blogs and online zines were plentiful, each lovingly curated, and Internet Radio was on a roll as Digital Streaming Platforms had yet to become popular. Instead, individuals and groups of enthusiastic music lovers catered to niche tastes – the age of tastemakers, with no algorithm in sight.
By the mid-to-late 2000s, Social Media and Google began to dominate, followed by digital streaming platforms in the mid-to-late 2010s. However, with these developments came an interesting twist. If you’ve read Cory Doctorow’s writings on the decay of online platforms, you’ll be familiar with his term, ‘enshittification,’ a reference to the now-familiar scenario in which profit takes precedence over user experience. We see this today in our social media feeds, in search engines, and on Streaming Platforms with auto-generated playlists. Social media and streaming platform algorithms favour content that is easily digestible and quickly appealing; we’re now in an era of homogenised music. Ironically, the people who champion independent music and help broaden horizons are still the music sites, but there are far fewer of us.
It’s all a vicious loop, for the most significant impact for us has been the collapse of ad revenue, which Google and Social Media have largely absorbed. This has escalated in the last three to four years, causing some sites to close down. Whatever you may think, we are not well-funded, so shifts like this do have a profound impact, and the last few years haven’t been easy.
While we’ve been barely scraping by, our eclecticism and careful curation has been steadfast; we’ve developed a unique voice as an antidote to the homogenisation described above. We are fiercely independent, have consistently championed independent music, and we continue to push boundaries in the music and news we cover. Our team of writers are deeply passionate, providing insightful reviews and delivering in-depth interviews that reveal the stories behind the music. We give a voice to artists through special features, and all our Mixtapes and Playlists are lovingly curated by humans, showcasing enough new music to keep the most demanding music seeker satisfied.
“I’ve learned about most of the music I’ve loved over the past couple of years from the fine people at this publication.”
Colin Meloy of The Decemberists
