Sally Anne Morgan is the latest guest on Thrill Jockey’s Deep Digs series, in which artists share their favourite Thrill Jockey releases. There are three sides to this series; on the one hand, it helps promote the latest release of the guest: Sally’s latest album, Second Circle The Horizon, was released on June 20th and was reviewed by KLOF’s Glenn Kimpton here, who concludes that the album is “a quiet, sometimes enigmatic celebration of the purity of nature and life through the lens of versatile music inspired by the Appalachian tradition. It’s her most cohesive and accomplished album to date.”
The series also grants us a fascinating insight into the artist and their musical tastes, and it’s a great way to discover Thrill Jockey’s back catalogue. A great example, and a new one on me, is Morgan’s opening selection, “Don’t Cry to Me,” released in 2004, which was the companion release to the film “The King of Bluegrass,” both of which chronicle the life and times of Bluegrass pioneer Jimmy Martin.
Sally also explores releases by Jack Rose & D. Charles Speer & The Helix, Elena Setien, and Sidi Toure.
